Caledonia native refereeing 2nd Olympics

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — In three weeks the Olympic flame will be lit and the Summer Olympics in Rio will officially begin.

If you will be watching beach volleyball, you might see Dan Apol of Caledonia.

Apol graduated from South Christian, then went to Grand Valley State University where he played club volleyball. To earn extra money, he started to referee.

He has now become one of the top beach volleyball referees in the world. The Rio games will be Apol’s second Olympic assignment.

On Friday, Apol spoke to 24 Hour News 8 about being a referee during the Olympics. Above, watch the full interview.
