Health advisory extended for Sunset Lake in Vicksburg

VICKSBURG, Mich. (WOOD) — A public health advisory for Sunset Lake in Kalamazoo County remains in effect due to high levels of E. coli.

Samples taken on July 12 from the bathing beach area at Sunset Lake Park on Page Street in the village of Vicksburg failed Michigan’s Water Quality Standards for total body contact.

The geometric mean of samples collected over the last 30 days recorded E. coli levels at Sunset Lake were 383.6 per 100 milliliter, according to health officials. The total body contact standard is 130 E. coli per 100 milliliter. The geometric mean over a 30-day period is an indicator that there is a chronic problem, health officials said.

Signs have been posted at the beach warning the public to use caution when coming into contact with the water at Sunset Lake.

Kalamazoo County Environmental Health will collect water samples again on Monday. Those results will be available Tuesday morning.
