MSP: Driver who hit dog walker blames ringing phone

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Van Buren County driver arrested for hitting a dog walker was distracted by her phone, according to authorities.

It happened around 10 a.m. Thursday in Porter Township.

The 65-year-old victim told Michigan State Police he was walking along the shoulder when a pickup truck crossed the center line and clipped him. The man said the driver’s side mirror hit his right arm and ribs before the vehicle drove away.

Troopers found the pickup truck at a home a few miles away. The 50-year-old driver told police she was reaching for a ringing cell phone when her vehicle veered. She said she believed she hit a mailbox but continued to drive, despite losing her driver’s side mirror.

The woman was arrested for failing to report an accident, causing injury. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.
