GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — When a tanning salon in metro Grand Rapids suddenly shut its doors over the weekend, customers were left to wonder where their money went.
Second Sun Tanning on Kalamazoo Avenue in Gaines Township was emptied out Saturday night.
Earlier that day, it had been holding a promotion on discounted tanning minutes that encouraged people to stock up.
“I had no idea they were going out of business, no idea that anything was going on, and the whole thing is cleaned out,” customer Autumn Grooney said.
She and other customers are confused and justifiably frustrated about losing their money.
Joan Bruin also purchased more minutes Saturday, only to find an empty salon the very next day.
“I was here 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon and I showed up around 11:30 Sunday — everything empty,” she said.
24 Hour News 8 is working to track down who’s responsible for the sudden closure. Tuesday, calls and a visit to the apparent owner’s home were not successful.
Customers who spoke to 24 Hour News 8 said they think the salon’s workers may not have known about the impending closure. They were disappointed there were given no warning ahead of time.
“It would’ve been nice to leave their contact information on the door or let us know when they were running that promotion, to be honest, that they were going under. [It] would’ve been nice and considerate,” Grooney said.
The attorney for the owner of the building in which the salon was renting a suite said they’re just as confused as customers. Apparently, they weren’t given any warning either.
