Watch Olympic Opening Ceremony at Rosa Parks Circle


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Olympics kick off on Friday and WOOD TV8 and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. are planning a free watch party for West Michigan.

Friday evening, Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids will be packed with a variety of Olympic-themed activities, along with a giant screen to broadcast the opening ceremony which will take place at Brazil’s iconic Maracana Stadium.

You’ll have a chance to meet some familiar faces from 24 Hour News 8, win great prizes and take home lots of fun freebies from WOOD TV8. Activities include mini basketball, soccer, volleyball, golf and more!

Bring your family, friends and a lawn chair and come cheer on our athletes as they kick off the Olympic Games.

Where: Rosa Parks Circle | Downtown Grand Rapids

Cost: Free

What: Bring your lawn chair and kick back and enjoy the opening ceremony on a giant screen surrounded by fans from across West Michigan.

Schedule: 

4:30 p.m.: Join Maranda for a live taping of Maranda Where You Live, including kid-themed Olympic demonstrations and fun!

5 p.m.: Watch 24 Hour News 8 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. broadcast live from the Rosa Parks Circle stage, plus enjoy activities like free Olympic themed photos, free activities and food trucks (food for purchase).

7 p.m.: Watch “Olympic Hopes; Gold Dreams” — a special half hour-long broadcast produced by WOOD TV8 Sports Director Jack Doles (who is covering the Olympics in Rio) about local athletes competing for gold.

7:30 p.m.: The official Olympic Open Ceremony broadcast begins live on WOOD TV8. Grab your lawn chair and pull up a seat to one of the most-anticipated TV events of 2016!
