HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — An 11-year-old boy was rescued near the North Pier at Holland State Park after he was unable to swim back to shore.
Authorities say two 11-year-old brothers were swimming in Lake Michigan about half way down the pier when they began struggling in the water due to wave conditions around 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Deputy Erik Bailey, who was on another call near the area, was able to locate the boys — one of whom was still struggling in the water and another who was able to get out by the rocks next to the pier.
Deputy Bailey threw a line to the 11-year-old boy in the water and helped him get into the Ottawa County Marine boat, according to a release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office says the boy was treated at the scene and released to his parents.
