Rescue after man swims from Mackinac to Round Island

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — A man had to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Saturday evening after swimming from Mackinac Island to Round Island.

In a Facebook post, the Mackinac Island Fire Department chief said his department got a call around 6:45 p.m. saying the man was trying to swim from Mission Point to Round Island — a distance of about a mile through Lake Huron, according to Google Maps — and had gone missing.

After a two-hour search, the man was found on the eastern shore of Round Island. He was taken back to Mackinac Island and treated for hypothermia.

He is expected to be OK.
