GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — The presumed incoming Ottawa County sheriff has named the person he intends to appoint as his second in command.
Capt. Valarie Weiss has been with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office since 1995, according to a Tuesday release. She currently supervises sergeants and deputies for several units, including school resources, community policing, reserve, mounted, marine and juvenile services. Previously, she served as a road patrol and community policing deputy and sergeant. She was promoted to captain in 2014.
She’ll serve as undersheriff under Steve Kempker. Kempker, who is currently the undersheriff, won the Republican primary for sheriff in August and is unopposed in November’s general election.
He’ll take over for Gary Rosema, who announced last October that he would retire after 22 years as the Ottawa County sheriff.
