Grand Rapids man drowns during family outing on Torch Lake

CLEARWATER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids man has died after being rescued by a 10-year-old relative during a family outing on a northern Michigan lake.

The Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office says 53-year-old Steven Iwaniw was boating with his family on Torch Lake Sunday when he went into the water to retrieve a toy. Authorities said Iwaniw was about 20 feet away from the boat when he began to struggle in the deep water, going under for approximately 30 seconds at a time.

Deputies said a 10-year-old relative pulled him above water and other family members helped pull him back on board, where they began CPR. Deputies arrived shortly thereafter and took over resuscitation efforts.

Iwaniw was transferred to another boat which took him to the DNR launch at Torch Lake Bridge. An ambulance then took him to a nearby hospital where he died.

Investigators have deemed Iwaniw’s death a drowning accident, but the case remains open pending further investigation.
