LAKE CITY, Mich. (WOOD) — A Muskegon woman was seriously injured after she was hit by a race car at a northern Michigan raceway.

The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. Sunday at the Merritt Speedway in Missaukee County’s Lake City.

A 50-year-old Cadillac man who was driving the race car told deputies his accelerator stuck causing him to spin out and leave the track sideways.

The car went through a fence, hit a spectator and then slid into a ticket booth that had two Merritt Speedway employees inside. Another employee outside of the booth was also hit.

The first person who was hit, identified by family on Facebook as 31-year-old Jennifer Johnson-Kiel, was pinned inside the ticket booth and had to be extricated.

She was flown to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids in serious condition. Family members posted an update on Facebook Monday saying Jennifer’s pelvis was fractured in four places and she had to undergo surgery. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help with her medical expenses.

Two of the other three people involved were treated at the scene and released. The driver was not hurt.
