PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The West Michigan Whitecaps are still in the running for the Eastern Division Championship.
In Monday’s Game 2 of the best-of three series against the Great Lakes Loons, the Whitecaps did all of their scoring in the first two frames to win 5-3.
“It was key for us to get on that (Loons) starter (Victor Gonzalez). Last time he pitched against us, he struck out eight of us through five innings. We chased a lot of balls in the dirt. Today, we didn’t,” Whitecaps manager Andrew Graham said after the game. “We saw it, were selective and we took advantage of it. So we stuck to our game plan and it worked.”
Whitecaps starter Sandy Baez was brilliant, striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings.

Now their sights are on winning Tuesday’s Game 3 at Fifth Third Ballpark, north of Grand Rapids.
The Loons won the first game of the series 4-1 on Sunday.
During last season’s playoffs, the Whitecaps came back from a deficit in the divisional series and then went on to win the Midwest League Championship.
