ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids man is in serious condition after a train hit his vehicle.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. Thursday on 64th Avenue at Chicago Drive in Zeeland Township.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Angel Rutiaga was stopped on the tracks on 64th Avenue, waiting for traffic to clear when an eastbound CSX train with six empty cars hit his Chevrolet Lumina.

Rutiaga was taken to Holland Hospital with serious internal injuries. The train operator was not injured in the crash.

An Aug. 2012 Google Street View map of the intersection shows the train crossing does not have gates but is equipped with railroad crossing signals in both directions.
