2 dead after car, semi collide near Athens

SHERWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Two Indiana residents were killed when the car they were in collided with a semi-truck south of the village of Athens.

The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. Friday at the intersection of M-60 and M-66 in Branch County’s Sherwood Township, according to Michigan State Police.

Police say Alexis Schroeder of Valparaiso, who was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt, failed to yield to a semi-truck that was westbound on M-60. The semi hit the driver’s side of the car.

The passenger in the car, Corinne Johns of Porter, was killed on impact.

Schroeder, 19, had to be freed from the car by firefighters. She was then rushed to a Kalamazoo hospital, where she died early Sunday, police said.

The truck driver, a 28-year-old from Union City, was not hurt.
