GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A West Michigan family’s emotional reaction to their loved one’s entry making it into ArtPrize Eight’s Final 20 was caught on camera.
Aaron Zenz’s piece Rock Around, featuring about 1,000 painted rocks, made it into the public’s top five for the installation category.
A YouTube video posted by Zenz on Sunday shows the Spring Lake family nervously awaiting the Final 20 announcement. As his name is announced, Zenz’s family erupts with screams and cheers.
Zenz’s family has visited every ArtPrize, but this is his first time entering a piece in the art competition.
According to ArtPrize’s website, Zenz and his children painted faces on the rocks, all in matching pairs. Zenz then took half of the rocks and arranged them outside the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum and the other half he hid in random locations throughout Grand Rapids.
He created the hashtag #RockAroundGR so ArtPrize visitors could view and share photos of their rock discoveries.
