Bloom ArtPrize piece inspires at Mary Free Bed

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It is well noted that art can have the power to help heal and inspire. “Bloom”, an ArtPrize entry this year in Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital’s lobby, demonstrates this.

Artist Jerry Cantania of Benton Harbor built this nature-inspired piece over a period of two years with the hope that it inspires those who come into Mary Free Bed to feel a personal sense of renewal.

The piece consists of four blown and hot-sculpted glass and metal sculptures, including 350 parts, weighing in at more than 1,500 pounds.

Cantania was assisted by five other team members, including his wife Kathy, who intentionally picked out the color palette to be energizing and revitalizing.

“Bloom” is part of a large expansion and renovation project that makes Mary Free Bed the fifth-largest freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the country. To learn more about “Bloom” and artist Jerry Cantania, visit
