ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 16-year-old girl was killed in a crash north of Walker late Saturday night, Kent County authorities say.
The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Fruit Ridge Avenue in Alpine Township. According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, a 19-year-old driving a GMC Yukon failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a southbound Jeep.
Authorities say a 16-year-old, one of four teens in the Yukon, was not wearing a seat belt was thrown from the vehicle. She died at the scene.
The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman, had to be freed from her vehicle. She was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency crews took everyone else involved in the crash to Butterworth and Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. They’re all expected to survive.
The crash is still under investigation, but the sheriff’s office said alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
