KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — More than 1,200 couples renewed their wedding vows at Western Michigan University on Saturday, setting a new world record.

A total of 1,201 couples said “I do” again, breaking the previous Guinness World Record set at Miami University in 2009 by 1,087 couples.

WMU President John Dunn and his wife, Linda, were among the couples who renewed their vows.

University officials said the record group included couples from more than 20 states in the U.S., Canada, Japan and also a couple from the WMU class of 1943.

Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell officiated the ceremony. There was also free cake, live bands and a Champagne toast.
