LEROY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police say an elderly man drowned in a Calhoun County lake Monday afternoon.

Witnesses called police around 4 p.m. after they saw debris floating in Sonoma Lake, south of Battle Creek, that appeared to be from a boat which had recently disappeared in that same area.

The Calhoun County Marine unit located the boat under water.

The Calhoun County Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team was then called to the scene and found the body of 89-year-old Theron Stults.

It’s unclear what caused the boat to sink.
