Video shows GRPD cruiser theft; man arrested


GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man is in custody for allegedly stealing a Grand Rapids police cruiser then ditching it around the block. Friday, the Grand Rapids Police Department released video of the incident.

The suspect, 24-year-old Daniel Rademacher, was arrested on Oct. 5, near Fuller Avenue and Franklin Street SE after detectives recognized him from the video. He has been arraigned on a unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge.

It happened on Oct. 4 when officers were called to the 100 block of Benjamin Avenue SE for a report of a man who had been assaulted with multiple weapons. While police rushed to help the injured man, a man got inside the cruiser.

In the video, the suspect can be seen in front of the cruiser with his hands on his head while vehicles drive by. He then walks to the side of the cruiser, asking if an officer is inside.

“I just want to talk to him. I’m not going to hurt anybody. You in there? I’m going to hurt anybody. I’m not going it hurt anybody,” the suspect said before he enters the vehicle and drives off.

After driving the around the block, the suspect turned the car off at Alexander and Fuller and walked away.

There was no damage to the cruiser.
