PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — A Portage woman will spend the rest of her life in prison for killing the woman who was dating her ex-boyfriend.

Monday, Theresa Petto was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

She shot and killed 25-year-old Rachel Drafta in June 2015. Witnesses told police that Drafta and Petto had argued in a driveway in the 2900 block of French Bay before the shooting. Petto was apparently upset because Drafta was dating her former boyfriend.

Petto was found walking down the street near the victim’s home and arrested soon after the shooting. A handgun registered to her was found tossed under a travel trailer.

In September of this year, she pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder. The Michigan Department of Corrections will decide what kind of mental health treatment is appropriate for her.
