GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman was hospitalized in critical condition after she was shot on Grand Rapids’ southeast side Thursday evening.
The shooting happened around 7:10 p.m. in the 500 block of Eastern Avenue SE near Baxter Street. The Grand Rapids Police Department says officers in the area heard multiple gunshots. One area resident told 24 Hour News 8 he mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks.
The 52-year-old victim was found with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. She was listed in critical but stable condition at the hospital Thursday night.
The woman was shot in front of Urban Family Ministries. There was an event going on at the time, but police aren’t yet sure whether the shooting was related to that.
The shooter or shooters took off from the scene in a vehicle, GRPD said. No one was arrested Thursday night and GRPD said it was not able to get a suspect description.
Eastern was shut down in both directions at Baxter as emergency responders were on the scene. The GRPD forensics team was looking at a car parking along Eastern just south of Baxter. Officers also taped off an area on Baxter west of Eastern and searching down the street.
Witnesses were not cooperating, police on the scene said.
