Deputies: Man dies after 20 ft. fall at Belding Fruit Storage

OTISCO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Ionia County Sheriff’s deputies say a man is dead after he fell while changing light bulbs at a fruit storage facility.

It happened around 8:05 a.m. at the Belding Fruit Storage facility at 11900 Fisk Road in Otisco Township.

Deputies say the worker, Arturo “Sam” Medina was changing light bulbs in one of the fruit cooling rooms. Medina was in an apple crate, and another employee raised him to a height of around 20 feet using a forklift. The bottom of the crate, which had rotted, gave way and tipped over, throwing Medina from the crate. He fell approximately 20 feet to the concrete floor.

The 62-year-old Medina, a Gowen resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say he was not wearing a hard hat or safety harness at the time of the incident.

Deputies say Medina worked at the facility for 38 years.

Ionia County Sheriff’s Office victim advocates were on-scene, and grief counselors will be available for employees returning to work Monday morning.

The incident is under investigation by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
