ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Allendale Township board members have green-lighted a plan to install permanent lights in an area near Grand Valley State University’s campus where several sexual assaults and a shooting were recently reported.

According to GVSU, the township board of trustees approved installing permanent streetlights along 48th Avenue this week. Township leaders also agreed to share the cost to install a sidewalk on Pierce Street between 42nd and 48th avenues.

The lighting will replace six temporary lights Consumers Energy installed on Oct. 7.

Consumers Energy said it planned to add permanent lighting to the area before the recent series of attacks, but pushed up its timeline for finishing the project.

Work on the sidewalk and permanent light fixtures is expected to begin next summer.
