GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The concept has been around for decades, but a recent study found success with male birth control shots.

The World Health Organization’s research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism studied twice-daily hormone shots in nearly 300 men. It works by suppressing sperm count. The method was found to be 96 percent effective, according to an article posted on HealthDay.com.

The report said some patients in the study experienced mood swings and depression — so much so that a safety committee stopped the study before its scheduled end. In fact, before its early end a number of men dropped out of the study because of the side effects.

Researchers will not go any further with this particular birth control shot for men despite a majority of the men said they would take the shots again.
