BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Byron Center woman accused of using a butcher knife to kill her dog will avoid prison time.

A judge Monday sentenced Ronda Pekel to 24 months probation. Last month, Pekel pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a charge of killing and torturing an animal.

According to court records, Pekel was “not acting appropriate” when the Kent County Sheriff Department was called to her home near South Division Avenue and 100th Street on New Year’s Day.

Authorities said they found her dog dead — stabbed multiple times with a butcher knife.

Charges were not filed until Jan. 28 following a necropsy by a veterinarian at the Kent County Animal Shelter.
