GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Football Club is adding a women’s soccer team for the 2017 season.
The team will play in the newly formed Midwest Division of the United Women’s Soccer League.
Matt Roberts, the president of Grand Rapids FC, said the new soccer team will not only allow female players the opportunity to highlight their skills, but also give young female soccer players in West Michigan a local team to watch and learn from.
“One of our objectives is to continue to grow the game at the grassroots level and starting a women’s team will allow young female players in West Michigan the opportunity to watch, interact with, and learn from top college and post-college players,” said Roberts in a release.
GR Football Club says details on the coaching staff, home field and schedule will be released at a later date.
The women’s games will be added to GR Football Club’s 2017 season ticket package at no extra cost. The tickets will include admission to ten men’s games and five women’s games.
The GR Football Club started its men’s minor league soccer team in May 2015.
