GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — There was a bit a scare for a zookeeper at John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids Thursday, but everyone is OK.

Zoo officials say that while a zookeeper was cleaning the lion pen, she forgot to shut one of the gates. That allowed the lion to get into the same area as the zookeeper. That keeper gave the lion commands and it went back to its pen. The keeper then shut the gate.

Throughout the incident, the lion was still in a contained area within the exhibit and was never a threat that it may get into a public area of the zoo.

Some students from the Zoo School were in the zoo when it happened and asked to go back to the school building, which they did, according to a letter sent to parents.
