KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo woman convicted of murdering her daughter on the child’s fourth birthday will spend the rest of her life in prison.
Judge Pamela Lightvoet Monday sentenced Daveeta Walker to two terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
On Sept. 29, a jury found Walker guilty of all charges against her — two counts of felony murder, first-degree child abuse and torture — in the death of her daughter, Kharisma Richardson.
Kharisma was found unresponsive at a home on Douglas Avenue in Kalamazoo on March 26, her fourth birthday.
An autopsy showed she suffered injuries from blunt force trauma on her body and blistering burns on her feet. According to a police report obtained by 24 Hour News 8, Walker admitted to police that she would often “whup” her daughter for accidentally urinating herself. She also said “whupped” Kharisma with a belt for “mouthing off.”
Walker told police her daughter was making noises like she was in pain when she went into her bedroom and wished her a happy birthday around 1 a.m. the day she died. Emergency responders were called to the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Walker’s three other children, who police found in a bedroom watching a pornographic movie, were previously removed from her custody.
