BERRIEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Benton Harbor woman is dead following a rollover crash in Berrien County Sunday night.

Troopers with the Michigan State Police were called to the crash on US-31 just south of Lake Chapin Road in Berrien Township around 6:20 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told MSP the vehicle veered off the highway and flipped multiple times. Police said all five passengers, including the 19-year-old female driver, and three other female teenagers, were taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. One of them, 84-year-old Ruby Johnson, died from her injuries at the hospital.

It’s unclear what caused the driver to lose control.

MSP said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, but “a lack of seatbelt use” likely contributed to the severity of injuries the group suffered.
