GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Police Department is investigating after an 8-year-old stabbed a 12-year-old Wednesday evening.

It happened around 8 p.m. at a home in the 900 block of Caulfield Avenue SW, southeast of the intersection of Grandville Avenue and Franklin Street. Adults in the home disarmed the 8-year-old boy.

The 12-year-old boy was stabbed in the upper torso, police said. He was taken to the hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, police said he is recovering well with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the 8-year-old was arguing with some younger siblings when the 12-year-old intervened, at which point the 8-year-old picked up a knife and stabbed him.

The 8-year-old was taken in for questioning and then lodged in juvenile detention, police said. It’s unclear how the two boys knew each other.

Police say at the time of the incident the boyfriend of one of the boy’s moms was watching them at home.
