41st anniversary of Edmund Fitzgerald sinking

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thursday marks the 41st anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.

The freighter went down Nov. 10, 1975, killing 29 crewmen. The sinking spawned a well-known song by Gordon Lightfoot, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

Meteorologist Matt Kirkwood said waves reached 25 feet, including some 35 feet rogue waves, with sustained winds of 50-60 mph and wind gusts up to 80 mph.
