ROCKFORD, Mich. (WOOD) — A Rockford High School teacher went on a rant about his disdain for President-elect Donald Trump, showing an image of the American flag upside down.

Rockford Superintendent Dr. Mike Shibler says what the teacher did was wrong.

Speaking to 24 Hour News 8 over the phone Thursday, he said he is aware of the incident and dealing with it personally. He says the teacher is still employed, but he wouldn’t go into further detail about what, if any, disciplinary action he may face because it’s a personnel matter.

24 Hour News 8 starting looking into it after getting a tip that included a Snapchat picture taken by one of the students. According to the tip, the science teacher projected a PowerPoint slide Wednesday that showed an upside down American flag and read, ‘I’m not sure what my purpose is today. Is it to assure others that just because I’m a white guy that I am not racist, sexist, homophobic, classist, etc.?” The last line read, “Oh yeah, Biology stuff.”

The tipster also said the teacher announced he was wearing black to mourn the death of America, then apologized to all of the women and people of color.

“I can’t believe a teacher would put something up like that,” said Diana Chettleburg, whose daughter is in the teacher’s class.

She and other Rockford parents said they were disappointed.

“To put something like that up that does not bring our country closer together,” Chettleburg said.

Students who spoke to 24 Hour News 8 agreed.

“I just think that it’s ridiculous that a teacher would go on a rant about his own opinion in the middle of class,” said Rockford High School junior Grant Hurlburt. “We are here to learn not hear about what people think.”

24 Hour News 8 reached out to the teacher, but did not hear back Thursday.
