ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Police in Ann Arbor are investigating a report of a white man who threatened to set a Muslim student on fire if she didn’t remove her hijab.

The incident near the University of Michigan was reported to have happened Friday evening.

Ann Arbor police Sgt. Patrick Maguire said Saturday the department is “investigating it actively … and soliciting information from anyone who may have witnessed anything.”

A hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. A crime alert issued by the university said the woman took off her hijab and left the area.

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.

Reports of threats, intimidation and racially charged violence have spiked since Tuesday’s presidential election.
