ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Valley State University has earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II national playoffs.

The seeds and first-round pairings were announced Sunday afternoon.

The Lakers also earned a first-round bye in Super Region Four. They will play the winner of a Saturday matchup between Texas A&M Commerce (9-1) and Colorado Mesa (9-1) in the second round on Nov. 26 at home in Allendale.

The Lakers wrapped up an undefeated regular season — their first since 2008 — when they beat Wayne State Saturday.

“2015, you know, we went six of the last seven on the road and I think we ran out of gas in the semifinal, made it to the Final Four,” GVSU head coach Matt Mitchell said. “And then this year … look at the scores. The score differentials, especially in the first half, we’ve gotten off to some really fast starts here at home. Weather can be an advantage for us, too. We practice here, we play here. We’re 15 miles from Lake Michigan. It’s going to get unpleasant here in November and December. And I think we’ve built a team with the nation’s leading rusher and a really stout defense to be able to withstand some of the weather that you get in West Michigan, so I’m glad that we have home field advantage.”

Ferris State University, meanwhile, earned a No. 2 seed in the same region. They’ll host Midwestern State Saturday in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs would need two wins and the Lakers one for the teams to meet again in the regional championship on Dec. 3.
