LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver was hospitalized in critical condition and a Van Buren County sheriff’s deputy sustained minor injuries following a crash along I-94 between Lawrence and Hartford Sunday.
The crash happened around 3:20 p.m. on I-94 near the 49 mile marker in Lawrence Township, according to Michigan State Police.
Authorities say a 73-year-old Kentucky man was headed west on the highway when he lost control of his pickup truck. The truck went into the median, at which point it became airborne and then landed in the eastbound lanes.
The sheriff’s deputy, who was eastbound on the highway, swerved to avoid hitting the pickup and crashed into the median.
The Kentucky man was hospitalized in critical condition.
The deputy was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and had been released by Sunday evening. His cruiser sustained some damage, but a Sunday evening release from MSP did not specify how bad that damage was.
The cause of the crash is not yet known.
MSP says there were highway closures for about two hours as emergency crews were on the scene.
