BERRIEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a Berrien County man involved in a crash was hit and killed as he stepped out of his vehicle.

It happened just before 6:30 a.m. Friday at Deans Hill Road and Old U.S. 31, just outside of Berrien Springs.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office says 81-year-old Robert Froehlich of Berrien Center was heading south on Deans Hill Road in his pickup truck when he turned left onto Old U.S. 31, in front of an oncoming pickup truck.

Both vehicles crashed. Investigators say as Froehlich exited his vehicle, he was hit by a northbound Toyota sedan driven by a 30-year-old woman from Berrien Springs.

When investigators arrived at the scene, Froehlich had already died.

The other two drivers were not injured.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office took all three vehicles in for evidence in the crash, which remains under investigation.

No arrests have been made. However, authorities say the final crash report will be sent to the prosecutor for review.
