BOSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Detroit man was killed following a single-vehicle crash in Ionia County Friday.

It happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. on eastbound I-96 near Hastings Road, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies say a green Ford pickup truck, driven by a 57-year-old Detroit man, was driving at a high rate of speed, weaving through traffic when he lost control and left the roadway. The vehicle rolled and struck several trees. The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

Several witnesses tried to help the driver. He was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

It appears the driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to deputies.

The Ionia County Sheriff thanked Elle Fedewa of Potterville, Thomas Floyd of Grand Rapids, Christa Thomas of Saline and MSP detective Sgt. Stasiak in a news release for giving aid to the driver.
