Grace’s Table: Empowering teen moms through local mom’s journey

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)-Research has shown the teen pregnancy rate in Kent county is more than 43 cases per 1,000 girls age 15-19. For many teen moms, support can be scarce during this difficult time. A local former teen mom is helping other teen moms find empowerment and support, through her own non-profit.
Grace’s Table supports young women ages 13-24, empowering them, and teaching them, that the label ‘Teen Mom’ does not define their lives. Having a baby at a young age does not have to be the end point of their story.

Grace’s Table is focused on three main goals – empowering, educating and employing teen moms. The bulk of the work they do is through weekly ‘Around the Table’ dinners. On Friday evenings, Lisa opens her home to moms for two hours of dinner, support, encouragement, and mentoring in a safe and stable environment. The time together helps the moms build healthy relationships with trusted adults and peers. Childcare is provided, along with diapers, wipes and bus passes. Around the Table currently serves 26 mothers who collectively have 42 children.

Grace’s Table offers one-on-one mentoring, professional counseling services, through 3rdChair of Grand Rapids and a mid-week Bible study. Moms can become as involved as they would like to be.

Grace’s Table is making an impact in Grand Rapids…
I’m the one people talk about, not to, unless I’m at Grace’s Table. It’s a safe place to be open and feel comfortable telling your story because people don’t look at you and shun you for your choices. What it means to me is family – caring people who hug me and ask about how I’m doing and actually care. – Mom, age 16
My life has changed since I found Grace’s Table. Through the support and love from women who have been through what I’m going through, I’ve learned to look at my pregnancy not as a failure, but as a reason to strive and never settle. – Mom, age 21
