Car-train crash seriously injures 1 near Fennville

CSX derailment cleanup expected to close intersection for hours

CLYDE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Fennville man was seriously injured when his car collided with a train in Allegan County, authorities say.

It happened around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at the railroad tracks on 118th Avenue near 56th Street in Clyde Township, south of Fennville.

Michigan State Police believe the 22-year-old driver was heading east on 118th Avenue when he ran into the side of the northbound CSX train. The vehicle ricocheted off the train. Police say one of the four cars the locomotive was pulling derailed about a mile north of the crash.

Firefighters freed the driver of the car from the wreckage. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries MSP described as serious to critical.

CSX plans to close off 120th Avenue near 56th Street from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday in order to bring in heavy equipment to move the derailed car back onto the track.
