Brutal Cold in Alaska

It’s cold enough to make a snowman shiver in our 49th state.  Tanana was the coldest spot I could find this morning at 57 below zero.  It got down to 53 below in Bettles, Livengood, Nikolai and Norutak Lake.  Fairbanks bottomed out at 51 below zero, the coldest temperature in six years.  On the south coast, Anchorage dropped to -14.  Valdez reported another 3.5″ of snow, bringing their snowcover to 44 inches.  Just northeast of Skagway, 18″ of new snow fell, causing officials to close the highway.  Fairbanks now has 19″ of snow on the ground.
