Arctic Air Moving In

Central Great Lakes sector loop Radars here should update automatically.  At noon, the temp. is 45 at S. Haven, 41 in G.R. and 34 in Ludington (all down 1 deg. in the last hour).  Moderate snow is reported at Frankfort.  In the U.P. moderate snow and blowing snow at Newberry and 23 deg.  Marquette has 19 deg. and Houghton is 15 with moderate snow, blowing snow and a wind chill of -4.  Winds are gusting to 35 mph over N. Lake Michigan and 40 mph along the Lake Superior shore (where high water levels will bring more beach erosion).

The snow today in the U.P. and N. Lower MI is mostly lake-effect snow.

Model Update:  The GFS model gives G.R. low temps. of 17 tonight and 16 tomorrow night.  The NAM has 16 tonight and 14 Sat. AM.  The colder air has caused the fall color change and leaf drop to accelerate.

This is an early PM pic. from near Lake Gogebic in the U.P.  (Mostly lake-effect) snow is piling up in the U.P:  12″ Allouez, 10″ Painesdale, Red Ridge and Ahmeek, 9″ Hancock and White Pine, 8″ Houghton and just south of Marquette, 7″ Big Bay, 6″ Laurium, Chassell, Twin Lakes and Rockland, 4.5″ Ironwood, 2.5″ S. Ste. Marie.  Moderate snow was reported in NW Lower MI at Frankfort and east of Traverse City.  Check out the snowman cam near Gaylord.   Snow on the Kalkaska camThe snowman cam at Twin LakesCheck out video of snow at the Mac. A blocking ridge over Greenland will force cold air south into the Northeast U.S. during the 3rd week of Nov. (and I bet this pattern will be around for a significant part of Dec.).  Check out the snow on the ground today vs. one year ago.

This is a typical average weather pattern for winter in N. America during a La Nina.  The coldest air relative to average across the N. Rockies, N. Plains and Great Lakes.  Wetter conditions in the S. Great Lakes and that means average to above average snowfall.
