Veterans Day Activities and Weather

I’ll be in the Kalamazoo Holiday Parade this AM.  The parade starts at 10:45 am and loops around Bronson Park and the downtown area.  WOOD is toward the end of the parade.  The entire morning team will be there and along with 3 members of Storm Team 8.  After the parade, stop by the WOOD Kalamazoo Studio in the Comerica Building at the NE end of Bronson Park.  You can have your picture taken with Santa in the special Gilmore Dept. Store Santa chair that was used for many years in the department store.

If you’re up early, you can head to the Veterans Day pancake breakfast at Post 179 of the American Legion at 2327 Wilson Ave. just north of I-196.  Look for the tank out front.  The pancakes are free for Veterans.  A Blackhawk helicopter will be landing in the parking lot in the morning and you can see that until it takes off around 2 pm. Beginning at 7 a.m. there’s a  Military Vehicle & Uniform Display by West Michigan Military Round Table Association – Civil War through Desert Storm  At 11 a.m. there’s a Remembrance Ceremony – At noon –  Taco Bar $5.00 provided by Post 179 Sons of The American Legion – 7:00 p.m. Guinness Brothers Band.

The Grand Rapids Veterans Day parade is daytime this year, because it’s a Saturday. It’s at 11 am and goes down Division St. in downtown G.R. Bring your flags, clap you’re hands and show our area veterans that they are appreciated.

At 6 pm, I’ll be at the Richard App Gallery on Cherry St. for “A Chair Affair” – hosted by Arts in Motion – there will be a live auction and a silent auction.  You can join us for an amazing night of food, wine, and some of the best art West Michigan has to offer, all while helping to enrich the community and the lives of individuals with disabilities through expressive arts.

That’s on WOTV4. The second game on WOTV 4 at 3:30 pm is Iowa at Wisconsin (my alma mater). Also at 3:30 pm – Michigan is at Maryland on the Big Ten Network. In the evening, the third game on WOTV 4 is the big clash between #3 Notre Dame and #7 Miami. In the NFL – the winless Cleveland Browns come to Detroit…that game is at 1 on CBS (not FOX this time) and on FOX, we might get Green Bay and Chicago…you never know for sure, but that’s the most logical of the FOX games to give G.R.

This is a picture of one of my birdbaths taken Friday (11/10/17).  We had a strong NW wind blowing right to left.  It produced a mini “standing seiche” with the water being pushed to the left over edge.  The temp. dropped below freezing and as it did icicles developed on the south edge .

Weatherwise…the high of 27 on Friday in G.R. was 23 deg. colder than the average high of 50, and tied the lowest high temp. ever on any Nov. 10.  The low temp. of 17 was one degree above the record low for the date..  This is a pic. of the orchard across the street from my house.  It was strange to go outside in the PM and see the orchard full of green leaves with a temperatures of 25 at 3 pm.  I didn’t see anyone in MI that got above freezing Fri. PM.  The high at the Muskegon Beach was 27.1 and it was 28.4 at the S. Haven Beach.  Low temps. Fri. AM:  +6 Houghton Lake, -3 Newberry, -5 Pellston and -7 Rudyard.  Just SW of Gaylord, they reported 6″ of snow on the ground.  Both the GFS and the NAM models give G.R. a high temp. of 37 today (Sat.) and 39 on Sunday…kind of a cloudy day today, but not quite as cold as yesterday.  We could see a little light mix late Sat. night into Sunday AM – then rain on Weds. and Fri. of this week.  It gets windy next Fri-Sat.

Happy Saturday and Happy Veteran’s Day.
