After a warm start to fall in Sept. and the first three weeks of October, the pattern changed and we’ve had three weeks of relatively chilly weather. The picture here is skiing at Boyne Mountain last Saturday, the earliest start to the ski season in over 20 years. In the last three weeks, Grand Rapids has had only two days that have been warmer than average and so far, the month of November has been 5.7 degrees cooler than average. In the U.P., Marquette has already had 18” of snow and they have had at least a trace of snow on 17 consecutive days (not inc. today (Tue.). The average temperature in Marquette so far this November is 27.0 degrees, five degrees below the freezing mark. In Northern Minnesota, there has been ice fishing on some lakes already. We had two storm systems coming our way this week. Snow cover this Tue. AM: 9″ Painesdale, 7″ Herman, 6″ Hancock, 5″ Paulding, 4″ Harvey, 3″ Gaylorde, S. Ste. Marie, Ironwood, Watersmeet, Amasa, 2″ Manistique, Ishpeming, E. Jordan, Munising, Gladstone, Michigamme, Norway, Marquette and Rapid River.
A band of rain crosses our area on tomorrow (good news for the deer – not so good for hunters) and another system will bring rain Fri. night into Sat. AM – possibly changing to snow by late Saturday. This system doesn’t look quite as strong as it did Sunday and Monday.
Here’s the GFS model for 1 pm Thanksgiving Day…showing lake-effect snow showers across much of Michigan. A 521 thickness would probably give us temps. in the upper 20s to low 30s and some slick spots on the roads. Too early to say for sure…but not looking real warm for the holiday.
We’ve got 3 days this week with a very high chance of rain (Saturday would be rain changing to snow). Plan your outdoor activities Tues. and Thurs. if you can. It won’t be raining all day Weds., but a band of rain that will last at least several hours will cross the area. Friday showers will develop and there is a slight chance of a rumble of thunder.
The first 12 days of Nov. were 11.9 deg. colder than avg. at Intl. Falls MN. They had an average temp. of 19.2 deg…so you can see why ice has been forming on the lakes there. INL: hasn’t been warmer than 34 since 10/29. Duluth is 11 deg. colder than avg. for the first 12 days of Nov. The warmest place in the U.S. on Mon. was Nogales AZ with a high of 89. The coldest was Gulkana AK with a low of -10. In the 48 states…the low was +9 at Presque Isle ME and Minot ND.
