Snowiest Christmas EVER!!

Central Great Lakes sector loop Radars here should update automatically.   We tied 1990 for Snowiest Christmas EVER in Grand Rapids with an even 7.0″ officially at the Ford Airport.  That brings the season snowfall total up to 27.6″ as of midnight.  Lansing added 3.4″ Monday, for a season total of 16.7″.  Kalamazoo added 4.9″ for a season total of 20.8″ and Muskegon recorded 2.6″.  They have a season total of 24.1″.  The stronger winds blew the heaviest lake-effect inland to the 131 corridor instead of at the Lake Michigan shore.  Lake Michigan is making a big difference.  At 2 am, it’s clear and -1 at Kenosha, Wisconsin, while it’s 14, cloudy with occasional snow at South Haven MI.  The cold pattern continues thru the first week of January.   GFS forecasting a HIGH  temperature of -10F on New Year’s Eve!   Huge wave hits lighthouse at Grand Haven.   Here’s the latest G.R. NWS forecast discussion.  We continue to monitor the possibility of ice jams on area rivers with the cold air creating lots of river ice.  Make sure ice is strong enough on area lakes (4″ for a person) to venture out on the ice.

  Heavy snow bands impacting northern Lower Michigan.  Erie Airport in Pennsylvania has recorded 18.8″ of snow in the last 12 hours. Erie, PA, received 34″ of snow on Christmas Day, shattering the previous record of 8.1″ set in 2002. Erie also set the record for most snow for December at 73″; old record: 66.9″ in 1989. More snow to come on Tuesday.  Entire lake-effect event will exceed 3-4 feet near Pulaski, NY.  For the first time in over 120 years of records Seattle had at least 1″ of snow on both Christmas Eve and Christmas. Official snowfall amounts for Seattle-Tacoma airport 1.6″ on the 24th and 1.0″ on the 25th.  It’s only the 6th time since 1884 that Portland (downtown) has had measurable snow on the ground on Dec 25th.

The 8-14 day temperature forecast from the Climate Prediction Center keeps much of the eastern half of the U.S., including Michigan colder than average to Jan. 8.
