Winter Storm Warning

Central Great Lakes sector loop Radars here should update automatically.   2:05 am – significant snow is west of a line from S. Haven to Fremont to Baldwin.  A FOOT of new snow in New Era in Oceana Co.  Right now, heaviest snow starting to move inland from the lake…should weaken as it does.  Moderate to heavy snow along the shore from the Muskegon area north.  Snowfall rates up to an inch an hour.   The G.R. NWS continues a Winter Storm Warning for Muskegon, Oceana and Mason Counties that will run to noon Friday.  This is for 6-10″ of new snow.  There is also a Winter Weather Advisory for Ottawa, Newaygo, Lake, Manistee, Benzie and Leelanau Counties for 3-6″ of new snow (locally 8″).  Keep in mind that snowfall will not be uniform over these counties.  In Muskegon Co., you are more likely to get 6-10″ of snow in Montague (near Lake Michigan) than near Casnovia or south of Ravenna.  Offshore breezes will develop this evening, creating a convergence line of lake-effect snow which will be mostly just offshore tonight into thru mid morning.  Arctic air sticks around for at least another weekSnow vortices over Lake MichiganFlint, Michigan, has set an all-time Dec. record low for the 2nd straight day, dipping to -17 this AM. Records date back to 1921.   Muskegon up to 11″ of snow on the ground, 5″ in G.R.  Could be the coldest New Year’s Eve in the eastern U.S. in 70 yearsSoap bubble freezes in Cedar Springs.  Nice win for Michigan State.  High of 18 in NYC – coldest Dec. day since 1989.  Out 9 days and still frozen solid!  Roads snow covered and slippery in much (not all) of West Michigan for the Friday AM commute.

Here’s the G.R. NWS graphic for Friday AM.

Look carefully at this pic. of downtown Chicago this evening and you’ll see two boats amid the icy slush that has been rather quickly forming nearshore.  I have no idea what two boats could have been doing out there now. O’Hare Airport had a high of +7 Weds.  Aurora, a western suburb had a high/low of +3/-15.

This  pic. Weds. from Thunder Bay Island shows the amount of ice that has formed over mainly the last 2-3 days.  The low temp. of -12 in G.R. Weds. AM was 33 deg. below the average low of +21.

This is Bittersweet Ski Area  Wed. evening.  Lots of boarders and skiers out.  Yeah, it’s cold…but the wind is light and there’s lots of powder.  The Michigan ski report shows bases up to 5 feet.

Here’s the Muskegon Channel, where you can see the “pancake ice” has expanded out to the breakwaters.  High temps. in W. Michigan were all between +10 and +15.  So far, this month is 2.4 deg. colder than avg. in G.R.

Click on the pic. to enlarge.  Here’s the Lake Michigan satellite pic. from Weds. – sunny in Wisc. and Ill. Partly to mostly cloudy in West Michigan from lake-effect clouds. You can still see the tornado scar from the 2007 tornado WNW of Green Bay. Green Lake and Geneva Lake (both deep lakes) still have open water. There is some ice in Green Bay and along the shore east of Chicago. Click on the pic. to enlarge.

Wind chills on New Year’s Eve.  At what temperature does champagne freeze.

Great Lakes ice cover is increasing. It’s not impossible that there could be a near record amount of ice for 1/1 as we start the new year.
