Winter Storm Warnings/Weather Advisories

Central Great Lakes sector loop Radars here should update automatically.  The Winter Storm Warning for Muskegon, Oceana and Mason Counties will expire at noon.  Already a foot of new snow is reported at New Era and another 1-3″ is possible this AM.  Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for Allegan-Barry-Van Buren-Kalamazoo- Counties until 4 am Sat. for 3-6″ of snow and slippery roads.  The Advisory for Lake-Newaygo-Ottawa- Counties runs until noon for mainly light snow and slippery roads.  The Advisory for Kent Co. is mainly for slippery roads.  The Advisory for Manistee, Benzie and Leelanau counties runs to noon for 3-6″ of snow (locally 9″ total).  There is a Flood Advisory for the Flat River in Ionia Co. due to an ice jam.  There’s also a Small Craft Advisory for anyone wishing to sail, motor or push your boat thru this:

This is the Mackinac Bridge (trust me…it’s in there).  Temps. are in the single figures there and it’s snowing.  Looks like you’re driving up into the clouds.  Here’s some 24-hour snowfall totals.  Muskegon had 10.7″ and they have 17″ of snow on the ground.  Also, snowcover this Fri. AM:  14″ Allendale,  7″ Hopkins, 6″ East G.R., Paw Paw, Mecosta and Plainwell, 5″ Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, 4″ Lansing.

Season snowfall:  Muskegon 40.9″, Grand Rapids 29.9″, Kalamazoo 23.5″, Lansing 17.0″

Here’s sunrise at Alpena MI, where there is ice as far out as you can see.  The Great Lakes cumulatively went from 3.3% to 9.4% ice covered in just five days, from Dec. 22 through Wednesday.

Also: Look at the cold air in Canada. Minnehaha Falls frozen. Lake Erie ice.

Here’s a record of the maximum amount of ice cover on the Great Lakes as a whole since the 1970s.  The winters of 2013-14 and 2014-25 were 2nd and 4th highest ice cover.  Last winter was one of the leanest years for Great Lakes ice.  This year we’re up to 13% ice cover on the Great Lakes.  The rivers that connect the Great Lakes have substantial ice.
