Cold Pattern This Week

Central Great Lakes sector loop Radars here should update automatically.  The Weather Weather Advisory has ended for all Michigan counties.  However, new Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from Iowa across N. Illinois to NW Indiana for the next system.  That’s going to lay down a stripe of 2-5″ of snow.  These advisories should be extended to the east and will include N Indiana, N. Ohio and S. Lower Michigan.  We’d get the snow tomorrow night and that will bean some slick spots on the roads Monday night and Tuesday morning…with more accumulating snow later in the week (esp. Friday).

This was an early afternoon view of the 131 expressway in downtown G.R. – traffic moved along a bit slower than usual.  Still some slick spots out there tonight – esp. sidewalks, parking lots, driveways and lesser-traveled roads.   At last check Grand Rapids had picked up a little over 4″ of snow today and a total of 7.7″ this weekend..  Season snowfall is now up to 78.6″ in Muskegon, 56.7″ in Holland, 53.9″ in Grand Rapids, 50.3″ in Kalamazoo and 32.6″ in Lansing.

This is the No. Indiana NWS graphic..showing the snow for Monday night.

Colder than average weather will hold into next week.  Here’s the GFS model high temp. forecast for G.R. for the next 8 days starting with tomorrow (Tue.):  25, 28, 24, 25, 26, 28.  So, not outrageously cold, but colder than average.  Should be a great week for area ski resorts.

The 6-10 day temperature forecast from the Climate Prediction Center gives Michigan colder than average temps. thru Feb. 14th.

Also:  Extreme cold, frostbite and hypothermia force halt to Yukon Arctic Ultra race.  “Queensland weather: Towns record coldest February day“.  Looks cold for the start of the Olympics in S. KoreaStill warm in the Southwest,   where they haven’t had much of a winter.  HUGE snowflakesHere’s what Mars looks like (the planet, not Bruno).  Looks like they got a little snow in N. ItalyFreezing rain in parts of the Carolinas and Virginia this AM.

Here’s Great Lakes ice cover…which has come up on Lake Superior and decreased on Lake Erie…but now should increase with an overall cool pattern.
