We get a break from the snow this week. Much of West Michigan has had 20″ of snow so far this month. Main roads have been plowed and are in pretty good shape. Side streets, lesser-traveled rural roads, sidewalks, parking lots and driveways are likely to still have slick spots.
Grand Rapids has had measurable snowfall now 10 days in a row. Our average Feb. snowfall is 14.8″ in G.R. and we’re already at 20.4″. We have 10″ of snow on the ground in G.R. – tying Dec. 16 for most snow on the ground this winter. Season snowfall: Muskegon 90.6″, Holland 75.8″, Oshtemo 73.2″, Kalamazoo 66.7″, Grand Rapids 66.5″, Grattan 49.0″, Lansing 44.9″.
Great Lakes ice extent has jumped to 64.3% on Saturday This is the 2nd highest % of ice cover for any Feb. 10 in the last 24 years. The average ice cover extent for the date is 38.1%. Last year we had 13.0% ice extent on this date and on 2/10/16, we had just a 5% ice cover.
The first 10 days of Feb. have been 6.1 deg. colder than avg. in G.R. and we have had only 10% of possible sunshine. We have had measurable snow 9 days in a row.
Here’s a Lake Michigan satellite pic. from Sat. PM – it was sunny across much of Wisconsin and N. Lower Michigan. Looks like Torch Lake (a deep lake and slow to freeze over) has frozen over and there is some ice in Traverse Bay.

It’s official- Chicago ties record for nine consecutive days with measurable snowfall. Since the start of December 2017, Los Angeles has only received 24% of its normal rainfall.
